Illinois Sees Dramatic Drop in Opioid Overdose Deaths

Opioid overdose deaths in Illinois fell by 36% from 2023 to 2024, with Cook County and Chicago also reporting a 37% decline in opioid-related deaths, according to a recent Chicago Sun-Times report.

Officials credit expanded naloxone access, harm reduction efforts, overdose prevention resources, and data-driven public health strategies as possible contributors to the decline. Despite this progress, fentanyl remains a major threat, and continued prevention, treatment, enforcement, and recovery support remain critical.
